MM-rastien yleisömäärä yllätti: pääsylippuja tilattiin jo lisää / Surprising Crowd Numbers at the World Orienteering Championships: More Tickets Ordered
Suunnistuksen maailmanmestaruuskilpailuissa Kuopiossa törmättiin keskiviikkona harvinaiseen ongelmaan, sillä Neulamäen kisakeskukseen saapui 4000 katsojaa.
”Yleisömäärä oli iloinen yllätys”, kertoi MM-kisojen pääsihteeri Sakari Hyvönen. ”Olemme jo tilanneet torstaiksi ja lauantaiksi lisää pääsylippuja, sillä ne ovat menneet niin hyvin kaupaksi.”
Kuopiossa päätettiin, että MM-kisoihin peritään katsojilta pääsymaksu, mikä on lajissa harvinaista. Keskiviikon kokemuksen mukaan päätös oli oikea. ”Kansa tavoitti kisapaikan. Kuljetuksistakin olemme saaneet kiitosta. Homma on toiminut mutkattomasti”, iloitsi Hyvönen.
Runsas yleisömäärä tarkoitti myös jonoja kahvi- ja muille myyntipisteille, mutta suunnistuskansa on tottunut selviämään pienistä ja suuremmistakin ruuhkista. Kilpailijatkin olivat samassa juonessa katsojien kanssa: nimikirjoituksia piirrettiin jokaiselle kyselijälle sekä kannustuksesta kiitettiin.
Pääsihteeri Hyvönen sai esimerkiksi Miika Kirmulalta terveiset, että jalka nousi kolme senttiä tavallista korkeammalle huutomyrskyssä.
Torstaina Neulamäessä suunnistetaan pitkien matkojen MM-mitaleista ja lauantaina odottavat viestit Puijolla. Viestipäiväksi Puijolle odotetaan vielä suurempaa katsojamäärä kuin Neulamäkeen, sillä stadionin alue sopii mainiosti isollekin joukolle kisojen seuraamiseen.

Surprising Crowd Numbers at the World Orienteering Championships: More Tickets Ordered
The World Orienteering Championships in Kuopio encountered a rare problem on Wednesday, as 4,000 spectators arrived at the Neulamäki competition center.
“The number of spectators was a pleasant surprise,” said the Secretary General of the World Championships, Sakari Hyvönen. “We have already ordered more tickets for Thursday and Saturday, as they have been selling so well.”
It was decided in Kuopio that an entrance fee would be charged to spectators at the World Championships, which is rare in the sport. Based on Wednesday’s experience, the decision was correct. “The public reached the competition venue. We have also received praise for the transportation. Everything has worked smoothly,” Hyvönen rejoiced.
The large number of spectators also meant queues at the coffee and other sales points, but the orienteering community is used to handling both small and large crowds. The competitors were also in the same spirit with the spectators: autographs were signed for everyone who asked, and the support was appreciated.
For example, Secretary General Hyvönen received greetings from Miika Kirmula that his legs flew three centimeters higher in the roar of the crowd.
On Thursday, the World Championship medals for the long distances will be contested in Neulamäki, and on Saturday, the relays will take place in Puijo. An even larger number of spectators is expected in Puijo for the relay day, as the stadium area is well-suited for a large crowd to follow the competitions.
