Kolmen koplan ratamestarityö huipentuu pian alkaviin MM-kisoihin/ The WOC course setter trio is ready to offer “nothing special, just good”

Ratamestarit ovat tehneet huikean työn ja kaikki on valmista pian alkaviin MM-kisoihin. Ratamestarityö on onnistunut edellytys hyvälle tapahtumalle ja Kuopiossa on luvassa varmasti elämyksiä niin kilpailijoille kuin katsojillekin. Ratamestareiden mietteitä siivittää kolme kovaa kysymystä:

The course setters have done a huge job and everything is ready for the World Orienteering Championships starting soon. Successful course setting is a prerequisite for a good event and Kuopio and its terrains are sure to be a great experience for both competitors and spectators. The course setters were challenged by the following three tough questions:

Jarmo Puttonen

Olen Jarmo “Jake” Puttonen, entinen maajoukkuesuunnistaja 55-vuotias
luokanopettaja Jyväskylästä. MM-kisoissa kuulun ratamestariryhmään ja toimin pitkän matkan ratamestarina.

Ratamestari toimii linkkinä monen eri tahon kanssa. Ratamestarin tehtävänä on ensisijaisesti huolehtia urheilijoiden oikeusturvasta ja pyrkiä luomaan radat, jollaisia varten heillä on ollut mahdollisuus harjoitella viime vuoden maailmancupissa, kevään katsastuksissa sekä
lukemattomissa WOC-treeneissä viimeisen parin vuoden aikana. Oma sloganini kaikkia näitä tapahtumia varten on siksi ollut “Nothing special, just good“; hyvät ja monipuolisesti haastavat radat riittävät, ei ole tarvetta sortua kikkailuun. Ratamestarin tulee osata ottaa huomioon jo suunnitteluvaiheessa median tarpeet, mukautua luontoarvojen mukanaan tuomiin rajoitteisiin sekä olla joustavasti yhteistyössä maanomistajien, areena tuotannon ynnä muiden sidosryhmien kanssa. Lisäksi pitää tietysti olla silmää hyvälle radalle.

Ratamestarille on eduksi, jos hän osaa kääntää rajoitteet ja haasteet lopulta niin, että ratojen suunnistuksellisuus jopa paranee. Vaikka MM-tapahtumassa on lukematon määrä tärkeitä rooleja, on onnistunut ratamestarityö edellytys hyvälle tapahtumalle. Siksi on mahtavaa, että olen saanut olla tekemässä näitä kisoja kaikkien huipputyyppien kanssa!

Heinäkuussa MM-kisailijoille tarjoillaan hyvät radat Kuopion parhaissa maastoissa. Rastiviikkolaisille ja muille areenoilla kisoja seuraaville tiedossa on sykähdyttäviä hetkiä ja iloisia tapaamisia niin uusien kuin vanhojen tuttavuuksien kanssa. Kotisohvillekin tarjoillaan
jännitystä ja silmäkarkkia, mutta ne kannattaa nauttia vasta sitten kun on ensin käynyt areenalla huutamassa suomalaiset hyville sijoituksille! Nyt jos joskus kannattaa tulla katsomaan kisoja paikan päälle!


I am Jarmo “Jake” Puttonen, a former national team orienteer, a 55-year-old class teacher from Jyväskylä. In the World Championships, I belong to the course setter group and serve as the long-distance course setter.The course setter acts as a link between many different parties. The course setter’s primary duty is to ensure the athletes’ legal safety and to create courses that they have had the opportunity to practice for in last year’s World Cup, in the spring selections, and in countless WOC training sessions over the past couple of years. My own slogan for all these events has therefore been “Nothing special, just good”; good and diversely challenging courses are sufficient, there is no need to resort to gimmicks. A course setter must be able to consider the media’s needs already in the planning phase, adapt to the limitations brought by environmental values, and be flexible in collaboration with landowners, arena production, and other stakeholders. Additionally, one must of course have an eye for a good course.

It is an advantage for the course setter if he can ultimately interpret the constraints and challenges in such a way that the navigability of the courses even improves. Although there are countless important roles in the world championship event, successful work by the course setter is a prerequisite for a good event. That’s why it is wonderful that I have been able to take part in organizing these competitions with all the top people!

In July, the World Championship competitors will be provided with good courses in the best terrains of Kuopio. For those joining the event week and others following the competitions at the arenas, there will be thrilling moments and joyful meetings with both new and old acquaintances. Even those at home will be treated to excitement and visual treats, but it’s best to enjoy them only after cheering on the Finns for good placements at the arena first! Now is the perfect time to come to watch the competitions live!

Olen Marko Uotila 59 v. naprapaatti Kouvolasta ja toimin ratamestarina keskimatkan radoilla niin karsinnassa 8.7. kuin finaalissa 9.7. Tavoitteena on tehdä kilpailijoille tasapuoliset ja riittävän vaativat radat, jotka mittaavat niin fyysisesti kuin taidollisestikin. Yleisölle tavoitteena on tarjota jännittävää suunnistusviihdettä niin paikan päällä areenalla kuin myös TV:n kautta.

Kuten vanhojen karttojen perusteella pystyy päättelemään, niin maastot tarjoavat varsin monipuolisia haasteita suunnistajille. Myös sen alueen vanhoista kartoista näkee, että maastot poikkeavat jonkin verran edeltävistä World Cup 2024 finaalin ja toukokuun testikisojen maastoista. Kuitenkin nuo edeltävät kilpailut antavat hyvän kuvan monipuolisista pohjois-savolaisista maastoista, kuten myös WOCin maastoista Tahkolla, Neulaniemessä ja Puijolla.

I am Marko Uotila, a 59-years old naprapath from Kouvola and acting as a course setter in the middle-distance both in the qualification race on July 8th and in the final on July 9th. As a course setter for the middle-distance courses, both in the qualification on July 8th and the final on July 9th.
The goal is to create fair and sufficiently challenging courses for the competitors, which will test both their physical and technical skills. Furthermore, the goal is to offer the audience exciting orienteering entertainment both on-site at the arena and through TV.
As can be deduced from the old maps, the terrains offer quite diverse challenges for the orienteers. The old maps of the area also show that the terrains differ somewhat from the terrains of the previous World Cup 2024 finals and the test races in May. However, those previous competitions provided a good insight of the diverse and varied North Savo terrains, as well as the WOC terrains in Tahko, Neulaniemi, and Puijo.

Olen kesälomaa ja MM-kisoja jo odottava konttorirotta ja aktiivinen veteraanisuunnistaja Mikkelistä.

Olen MM-viestin ratamestari, mutta toki tulen myös avustamaan Jakea ja Markoa
keski- ja pitkän matkan kisoissa lähempänä kilpailua. Vastaavasti saan heiltä arvokasta apua viestikilpailun käytännön järjestelyissä kuten myös Fin5-ratamestariryhmältä, joka on ollut tärkeä paikallinen tuki meille “keikkaratamestareille”.

Ilman ratoja ei olisi kisoja! No, vaikka tämä pitää paikkansa, niin ratojen suunnittelu on vain yksi osa onnistuneen kisaviikon kokonaisuutta. Yksinkertaisimmillaan ratamestareita tarvitaan siihen, että kilpailijat saadaan jonkinlaiseen järjestykseen, kun mitellään maailman parhaan suunnistajan tai joukkueen tittelistä. Mutta aivan yhtä tärkeää on huolehtia paikalle tulevan yleisön turvallisuudesta ja viihtyvyydestä tai siitä, että “mualiman navan” ulkopuolellekin tuotetaan laadukasta ääntä ja kuvaa eri medioiden välityksellä.

Heinäkuussa odotan suomalaista kesäsäätä, eli ihan mitä tahansa! Mitä taas radoilta
on odotettavissa? Sen aika näyttää. Me ratamestarit olemme varmaan
hankalia haastateltavia kisojen alla, mutta kunhan karanteeni suljetaan, niin eiköhän niistäkin ala tietoja tihkua.

I am a “desk rat” (office worker) waiting for summer vacation and the World Championships, as well as an active veteran orienteer from Mikkeli.

I am the course setter for the relay World Championships, but I will also assist Jake and Marko in the middle and long-distance competitions closer to the event. Similarly, I will receive valuable help from them in the practical arrangements for the relay competition, as well as from the Fin5 course setter group, which has been an important local support for us ‘freelance course setters’.

Without courses, there would be no competitions! Well, while this is true, the design of the courses is only one part of the overall success of a competition week. At its simplest, course setters are needed to classify the competitors in some sort of order when competing for the title of the best orienteer or team in the world. But equally important is ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the audience present, as well as providing quality sound and visuals to various media outlets outside the “mualiman napa, center of the universe in Kuopio”.

In July, we are to expect typical Finnish summer weather – so it can be basically anything! As for the courses, time will tell. We course setters are probably difficult to interview before the competitions, but once the quarantine is closed, information will surely start to find its way.
